MILWAUKEE -- A 17-year-old from Milwaukee is recovering after he was struck by a stray bullet on Tuesday night, July 26th in McGovern Park.

Thankfully, FOX6 News is told the young man is getting better, and he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

McGovern Park is one regulars describe as very peaceful -- but that was not the case Tuesday night.

"It had to have been somebody that`s not normally here," Shay Noblin said.

Noblin runs a snack cart with her girlfriend. She said they usually leave the park around 9:00 p.m. each night, but they took off a little earlier Tuesday since the crowd was getting light.

"Nobody was arguing. Nobody was fighting -- so I don`t even know how that transpired," Noblin said.

Police say two men began shooting at each other around 8:50 p.m.

A stray bullet hit the 17-year-old victim.

"It`s sad we can`t let them come up here and enjoy themselves without worrying about them," Lamont Torres said.

Torres coaches the Dynasty Elite AAU basketball program. Besides passing and defense, Torres said he also instructs his boys to be the bigger man.

"Sometimes it`s better to walk away and leave that alone -- and a lot of kids don`t know how to do that because they`re not taught that," Torres said.

Because two men refused to walk away on Tuesday night, a 17-year-old had to be taken to the hospital -- and others said they're relieved it wasn't them.

"We could`ve been out here," Noblin said.

"Stray bullets, stray bullets can touch anybody, you know?" Torres said.

Milwaukee police are seeking suspects in this case, and working to determine a motive.
