WAUKESHA COUNTY — A Waukesha County Sheriff’s Deputy’s gun went off in a struggle with a man at the Waukesha County Juvenile Center on Monday afternoon, August 17th.

Officials say just before 3 p.m., the deputy assigned to the juvenile center was involved in a struggle with a 34-year-old man from Hartland who was there for a court hearing.

Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson  says the man attempted to disarm the deputy. It was during that struggle the deputy’s gun went off. Two shots were fired — and one bullet went into the man’s leg.

During a news conference on Monday evening, Severson gave a vague answer when asked who actually fired the gun.

“I’m not discussing that at this point,” said Severson.

Deputies at the juvenile center provided medical aid to the man — and he was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment.

Officials say the deputy involved in this incident is 44 years old — and a 16-year veteran of the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department. He will be placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing — this is standard procedure.

There are no other suspects involved in this incident — and the incident was isolated within the juvenile center.

Because this is an officer-involved shooting, an outside agency, in this case the Waukesha Police Department, will be handling the investigation.
